“Your Oral Health
Good oral health is more than just nice looking teeth! “Oral” means your entire mouth – teeth, gums and tongue. The health of your mouth can be the first sign of health issues in other parts of your body. Often, diseases like cancer or diabetes can cause oral problems. For example, people with diabetes can develop tooth and gum problems if their blood sugar stays high and they do not keep their teeth clean.
How can you keep your mouth healthy?
Your Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH) will develop a personal oral self-care program for you that should become a daily habit. It should include:
- Brushing your teeth and tongue twice a day
- Cleaning between your teeth with floss or another aid as recommended by your RDH
- Regular visits will allow your RDH to monitor your mouth for signs of infection or disease.”
